First exhibition of my photography in Kigali in December 2015.
Topic: Transformation of historic buildings into modern urban life. The city of Kigali was founded by Dr. Richard Kandt, a German Doctor and explorer around a hundred years ago. Kigali at that time became a German Colony. Then, the country saw some terrible events, such as the 1995 Genozide. Now, the country is safe and clean. The people in Rwanda want to overcome the recent history. The city of Kigali wants to develop into a modern economic hub – with Singapore as an leading example. This usually means, that the historic architectural remains of the past will be distroyed. I was asked by the Goethe Institute of Kigali to document the old remains of the city.
It was a challenge. I did not want to just take photos of old buildings. I decided, to put two photos together on one panel. This shows the contrast, which I was feeling, whenever I walk through the city. I hope, each panel tells a small story.
